Intercooler and Air Temp Reduction

Mod Benefit Drawback Is it a problem? Notes

Wash out IC with petrol
  • Clean out the internal crap/oil within the IC
  • IC more efficient
  • Reduced intake temps
  • More power
  • Less chance of detonation
  • Need to ditch old oily petrol
  • Need to buy some more Toyota coolant - expensive!

No

As you've got the IC off, you might as well insulate it!
Insulate IC
  • IC more efficient
  • Reduced intake temps
  • More power
  • Less chance of detonation
  • Need to buy some heat reflective tape and/or insulating mating

No

The IC sat unshielded on top of engine and exhaust manifold,  and therefore suffers from heat soak - reducing the IC efficiency
Upgrade front IC radiator
Picture
  • Improve IC efficiency and lower intake temperatures
  • IC more efficient
  • Reduced intake temps
  • More power
  • Less chance of detonation
  • Need to remove aircon
  • Need to buy and probably modify a water radiator and then mount it
  • £

Yes, need to ditch aircon

A Metro turbo radiator is a good choice
Constantly running IC pump
How to article
  • To ensure IC operates at maximum efficiency
  • IC more efficient
  • Reduced intake temps
  • More power
  • Less chance of detonation
  • Increased wear on IC pump

No

18 months of constantly running and no problem with reliability...
Water Injection
How to...
What is...
  • Reduce intake temperatures dramatically
  • Help prevent detonation
  • More power
  • Less chance of detonation
  • Helps to clean valves etc
  • ~£300
  • May need to drill inlet manifold or throttle body to mount sensors

ish - fitting and wiring of components

An excellent way to cool the intake air temperatures

You can also use the system to help raise the octane rating by adding Methanol to the water

Remove Throttle Body coolant pipes (should be heater pipes!)
  • Reduce intake temperatures
  • More power
  • Less chance of detonation
  • Less engine complexity
  • More room in engine bay
  • Emissions may rise (doubtful)

ish

Access is awkward and you need to identify the correct pipes!
Remove under bonnet insulation
Picture
  • Reduce under bonnet temperatures
  • Cooler engine bay
  • More power
  • Require heat deflector tape under bonnet, above the turbo/cat to protect paintwork
  • Remove and dispose of carefully - may contain asbestos
  • Engine noisier - especially if you have a dump valve installed

ish

Make sure you protect the paintwork directly above the turbo/cat!
Remove cam belt top cover
  • To reduce the temperature within the cambelt area
  • Prolong cambelt life
  • Allow better "air cooling" to No 1 cylinder area
  • Can instantly see the condition of the cambelt

  • Awkward to remove
  • Exposed rotating parts - dangerous
  • Wires may get caught in the rotating sprockets

ish

Cable tie all the wires out of the way, be very careful when working in the engine bay when the engine is running

Adding cambelt area cooling was a later modification to the 185CS/RC and 205 GT4s
